Fatty Liver Is Now a Global Health Priority: What Does It Mean for Patients in 2026?

Fatty liver is no longer a condition doctors can simply dismiss as a minor finding on an ultrasound report. In May 2026, the World Health Assembly formally recognised steatotic liver disease (SLD) as a major and growing noncommunicable disease challenge. WHO estimates that SLD affects around 1.7 billion people worldwide , with the burden expected to increase alongside obesity, type 2 diabetes and other metabolic risk factors. For patients, this does not mean every case of fatty liver will lead to serious liver disease. It does mean that an incidental diagnosis deserves proper evaluation rather than being ignored.
